Where Quality of Life is a Way of Life

Emergency Management

Disasters disrupt hundreds of thousands of lives every year. Each disaster has lasting effects, both to people and property. If a disaster occurs in Lakeland, local government and disaster-relief organizations will try to help you, but you need to be ready as well.

Local responders may not be able to reach you immediately, or they may need to focus their efforts elsewhere. You should know how to respond to severe weather or any other disaster that could occur in this area such as earthquakes, extreme cold/heat, flooding, pandemics or terrorism. You should also be ready to be self-sufficient for a minimum of three days and up to two weeks. This means providing for your own shelter, first aid, food, water and sanitation.

Being prepared can reduce the fear, anxiety and losses that accompany disasters. Communities, families and individuals should know such things as what to do in the event of a fire and where to seek shelter during a tornado. You should be ready to evacuate your homes and take refuge in public shelters and know how to care for your basic medical needs.

You can reduce the impact of disasters by having a family communication plan and preparing disaster kits for home, office and car. Sometimes, you can avoid the danger completely by being properly prepared. This section will provide you with the tools to properly prepare your family for any type of disaster, whether man-made or natural.
