Partnerships in Public Safety

The City of Lakeland contracts with the Shelby County Fire Department for fire services, and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) for police services.

Lakeland households and businesses pay monthly fees in their utility bills for these services.

Crime Prevention Tips

There are simple steps all residents and visitors to the City of Lakeland can take to help prevent and deter crime:

  • Keep vehicles locked, with valuables out of sight from plain view
  • Keep garages on homes closed overnight and when not in active use
  • Keep doors between garages and the interiors of homes locked, as well as exterior doors of homes
  • Do not open a home garage, start your vehicle to warm up/cool off, and leave it unattended
  • Do not leave firearms in vehicles that are unlocked and/or unattended
  • When shopping, park in well lit areas with other vehicles and persons present

Those who wish to become more involved on a volunteer basis may sign up for the Sheriff's Citizens Academy. Visit the Academy link to sign up and find more information. Sessions are generally over a four-week period from 6pm - 9pm each Tuesday and Thursday. To be admitted -

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must complete a background information form prior to acceptance
  • Must not have any felony convictions
  • Class sizes are limited to 50

S.H.A.R.E. (Sheriff's Hub and Resource Exchange) is a proactive, problem-solving partnership with the community to provide prevention and investigative tools to allow the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office to more easily solve crimes. An additional benefit is the ability to identify the locations of video surveillance systems which will enable SCSO detectives to enlist the assistance of the community to help obtain video evidence to investigate criminal activities. The program proactively partners with residents and businesses to keep our community safe and solve crime.

S.H.A.R.E. allows the community to - 

  • Share photos and videos of crimes anonymously
  • Register your home or business security camera
